On April 12, 2026, in the early evening in the Bonan neighborhood of Moule, Guadeloupe, three gendarmes responded following a call from a local resident reporting a public disturbance. Upon arrival, they found Jean-Lucien Argelier, known as Libert, 65 years old, holding a knife. According to Pointe-à-Pitre prosecutor Caroline Calbo, the gendarmes first used a taser before one of them opened fire three times at Jean-Lucien Argelier, who died at the scene.

Contacted by our editorial team, the collective Gwadloup Kont Vyolans a Jandam painted the portrait of a marginalized man: Jean-Lucien Argelier spent much of his time on the streets, suffered from psychological instability and a motor disability. The circumstances of the intervention are disputed by the lawyers' collective Avoka Defans a la Defans, who have called into question the conditions for lawful self-defense. The collective also denounced in its April 14 statement a failure to provide adequate assistance to Jean-Lucien Argelier after the shots were fired.

A video circulated on social media capturing the scene moments after the shooting shows gendarmes searching the unconscious victim on the ground, while others pushed back witnesses attempting to approach him.

The gendarme responsible for the shooting was taken into police custody on the evening of the incident, and his detention was extended by the prosecution. On Tuesday, April 14, he was brought before the court, placed under formal investigation for "lethal violence by a person holding public authority" and subjected to judicial supervision with a prohibition on carrying weapons. The investigation was handed to the Research Division, tasked with determining whether the conditions for lawful self-defense were met.

The Kolektif Gwadloup Kont Vyolans a Jandam stressed that this is the first time a gendarme responsible for a fatal shooting has been placed under formal investigation so swiftly in Guadeloupe, and demanded that full light be shed on the circumstances of Jean-Lucien Argelier's death.
