On Tuesday 4 March 2025, Nanterre prosecutors called for the police officer who fired the fatal shot at Nahel M. to stand trial for murder. The decision came a year and a half after the events and marks a crucial step in the quest for justice over the circumstances of his death.
On 27 June 2023, Nahel Merzouk, aged 17, was shot dead at point-blank range by a police officer during a traffic stop. The incident, filmed by a witness, sparked a wave of revolt across France.
One year later, on 27 June 2024, in partnership with Blast, Index published a detailed reconstruction of the circumstances of the killing, cross-referencing the case file with the available videos to establish exactly where Nahel was when the shot was fired, and what the two officers involved did.
