Steve Maia Caniço: the police commissioner ordered to stand trial

The case of Steve Maïa Caniço, the young man who drowned following a police operation, has taken a new turn. The police commissioner who led the operation has been ordered to stand trial.
On Tuesday 19 December, Rennes prosecutors announced that a police commissioner would stand trial in the criminal court (tribunal correctionnel) for “involuntary manslaughter”. Commissioner Chassaing was in charge of the controversial police operation on the night Steve Maïa Caniço drowned in the Loire at the 2019 Fête de la musique in Nantes.
In February 2022, Index had produced an independent expert video report commissioned by the investigating judge in charge of the case.
